10:00AM – Chinese New Year Parade – Lions, dragons, gongs and community groups will parade through downtown Jacksonville. Students from SOCCA’s Lion Dance Clinic will showcase their newly learned skill. To celebrate the “Year of the Dog,” join the procession with your beloved four-legged best friend. 11AM – 2PM – “Sit, Stay, SMILE!” Doggy Photo Booth – Get a free portrait quality color print on the spot. Digital file photo also available. Bring your four-legged best friend for a glam photo-shoot by professional photographer Gracie Mills at Doc Griffin Park for your pet’s Year of the Dog memento. This booth is sponsored by SOCCA. Donations are accepted. All dogs must be on leash at all times and accompanied by adults at Doc Griffin Park.

11:30AM- Chinese Health Practices: Herbs, Foods, Acupressure & Qi Gong – Suzanne E. Sky offers ancient, simple practices for staying healthy through the seasons. Briefly explore Chinese medicine’s 5000-year history and roots in Taoist philosophy. Key principles of dynamic health and harmony suggest herbs, foods, and lifestyle for Winter and Spring. You will learn an acupressure flow to restore energy, a short centering meditation, and a Qi Gong pose to promote calmness. Suzanne has taught Chinese health practices for many years and loves sharing the treasures of Chinese medicine.
12:30PM- Chinese Astrology: The Year of the Brown Earth Dog – In the Chinese Zodiac calendar, if you were born in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006, you would be a ‘dog.’ So what’s in your fortune? Ken Bendat, Chinese scholar and doctor of Chinese medicine, reveals amusing and insightful perspectives and stories for this year.

11:00AM- From Oregon to Guangdong: Retracing the Path of Oregon’s early Chinese Residents by Chelsea Rose, Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology.
Chelsea E. Rose, MA, RPA (SOULA) has been studying the history of Chinese immigrants to Oregon for more than a decade. Chelsea will be sharing stories about her archaeological work in Oregon and her travels to China, and how a transnational perspective has allowed for a better understanding of the lives of the early residents in Jacksonville’s Chinese Quarter.
12:00PM – Historian Larry Smith will present an illustrated talk on the history of Jacksonville’s Chinese miners. He will trace their roots from China, through the gold fields of California and eventually into Southern Oregon. Larry’s talk will focus on how the Chinese tried to adapt, as much as their culture would allow, to the new country that they found themselves. Weather permitting Larry will lead a tour to the “Long Tom” Chinese gold-miner memorial fountain.
Larry Smith was a graduate of LeTourneau University and Southern Oregon University. He started work as a park ranger at Crater Lake National Park, then taught at Jacksonville School for 33 years where he developed an interest in the town’s history. Larry has been appointed by the City Council as Jacksonville’s official town historian.
1:00PM – Traveling With An Assistance Dog – Join training director John Drach and staff of Dogs for Better Lives for an informative discussion about what to consider when traveling with an Assistance Dog in the US and abroad. (Note: there will be components of training in this demonstration and to avoid distraction presenter requests that audience not bring their own dogs to this presentation.)
John Drach is the Training Director at Dogs for Better Lives (formerly Dogs for the Deaf) and has been a certified dog trainer for over 25 years. He has held positions with many of the assistance dog organizations in the United States and has been involved in training dogs for most of his adult life.

12:00PM Chinese Traditional Medicine for Dogs – Dr. Jeffrey Judkins of Animalkind Veterinary Clinic in Jacksonville practices alternative medicine for animals.
Dr. Jeffrey Judkins brings more than 25 years experience providing a blend of herbal and nutritional medicine with acupuncture and homeopathy to support healing at the root for your pets and livestock. “Dr. J” got his veterinary degree from Louisiana State University in 1984, and has practiced in Austin, Texas, and Fairbanks, Alaska, before establishing Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic, the first holistic veterinary hospital in Portland in 1995. Now he has brought his unique style of holistic, complementary veterinary medicine to Southern Oregon.
1:00PM – Animal Wise – how we know animals think and feel – a booktalk by author Virginia Morell about her New York Times Bestseller book.
Virginia Morell is an author, and a correspondent for Science and National Geographic. Animal Wise is her fourth book. She had written articles for the New York Times Magazine, Atlantic, Slate, Audubon, Scientific American, Discover, National Wildlife, and many more publications and newspapers. Her articles have been included in collections of the “Best Science and Nature Writing” and received awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists.
2:00PM – Guest Artist Meet and Greet – Huanchong Alexey Wang 魦焕冲 will arrive in a Lion Dance and will meet and chat with patrons and viewers here at his exhibit Dance of Ink: Art of Traditional Chinese Brush Painting 飘”青斁黀. He will do a demonstration of his brush-painting technique (see more information under EXHIBITS).

12:00PM – Reuniting Loved Ones: One Sniff at a Time – Jackson County Search and Rescue will present an overview of how their K9 dogs are selected for their characteristics, for different “jobs” and the training required for their SAR certification. Weather permitting there will be live K9 demonstration in the parking lot. (Note: Animals will not be permitted in the Fellowship Hall.)

SoHumane’s Smooch a Pooch for the Year of the dog: Dog Kissing Booth and information table. SoHumane (Southern Oregon Humane Society) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1928 in Medford, Oregon. The mission is to improve the lives of pets and people through sustainable programs of education, adoptions and spay/neutering. SoHumane does not receive government funds and relies on private donations from individuals, businesses and foundations to sustain our mission.
Dogs for Better Lives information and display booth (formerly Dogs for the Deaf) is a national, award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit organization rescuing and professionally training dogs (since 1977 (http://www.dogsforbetterlives.org/our-dogs/). Through a federal mandate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) these Assistance Dogs are trained professionals critically important to provide their handlers with accessing the world during their everyday life.

Dance of Ink: Art of Traditional Chinese Brush Painting 飘”青斁黀 by artist Huanchong Alexey Wang 魦焕冲. Alexey was born in Moscow Russia, and is of Chinese descent. Through the years, Alexey expressed great interest in Chinese Brush Painting and pursued brush painting as a hobby. He won a gold award in the 9th International Olympic Calligraphy and Drawing Contest for Young Adults and the silver award in the 2nd China Hope Cup National Young Adult Calligraphy and Drawing Contest for his Peony Paintings.

Rebel Heart Books is excited to participate in Jacksonville’s treasured annual Chinese New Year celebration. On February 17, 2018, window display will include titles by renowned Chinese authors, excellent nonfiction works on Chinese and Chinese-American history, as well as a short informative video exploring Chinese contributions to literature. Rebel Heart Books is located on the parade route, at 157 W. California St.

Chinese History in Southern Oregon – an exhibit by students and staff of Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA) highlighting the history of the Chinese community in Southern Oregon. The display features local artifacts from the Jacksonville excavations.
